What to do if your bike is stolen

Did you know that in the UK one bike is stolen almost every minute? Only 4% of those are ever retrieved and returned to their owner, making bike theft a serious issue for cyclists.

Having your bike stolen can be frustrating – especially if it is your main mode of transport – and the expense of buying a new one is usually very inconvenient.

While most of us are aware of measures to prevent our bikes being stolen, we’re often less aware of what to do if the worst happens. Cycling insurance experts Cycleplan have put together a guide (originally published on their site) explaining how to report a bike theft and the steps you should follow in order to try finding it.

It also gives a refresher of how to discourage thieves in the first instance.
